I’m happy to communicate that yesterday, 2009/08/27, the city council of the Borough of Teo, in Galicia (NW Spain), passed a resolution acknowledging peak oil. As far as we know it’s the second Spanish local authority in doing so after La Palma in Canary Islands in 2007.

The end of oil is closer than we thought. An industry expert tells us we’re in for 40 years of bad road.
So we’ll visit the oil-free alternative called “Transition Town”, a community of high-energy people experimenting with a low-energy lifestyle in England.
One “emerging consensus view”, even among politicians who continue rooting for economic growth if only to claw tax receipts for paying off swollen national debt, is that world oil demand will ceiling if not crater. Peak Oil has won converts, some of them even able to openly admit it is real, but mostly selling oil saving and oil substitution to consumers as part and parcel of the hunting down of the Evil Molecule called CO2.
For decades the “Holy Grail” of the New Energy Economy has been to find ways to store wind and solar energy. The answers are here, and they are much more plain and simple than we thought. Like Indiana Jones in his Last Crusade, we need to see the Grail that is right before our eyes. The means to enable solar and wind energy to serve as our primary energy supplies are at hand.

As someone who has spent the past quarter of his life in the lower latitudes, the fancy footwork and the tropical rhythms still present a bit of a challenge on the dance floor. All the same, when I see my peak oil-aware brethren struggling to define and implement the best way to achieve a lower carbon future, I feel a bit of confidence that in this corner of the world, we are a couple of steps ahead of our temperate climate cousins. At times the contrasts are striking, at times comic.
