Many positive visions of a post-peak future portray a world of bright new options. The impact of today’s legacies, though, makes it much more likely that we will have to work within the limits of existing infrastructure. The concept of retrofitting, briefly famous during the energy crises of the Seventies, may turn out to be a key concept in the future ahead of us.

The peak oil crisis: Saving the Chesapeake Bay
Cellulosic ethanol was a perfect fit for the Chesapeake’s watershed which has lots of forests and underutilized agricultural land, and is not particularly good corn country. A massive move towards growing and using cellulosic ethanol has the potential to help clean up the Bay and the air as well as powering our cars and providing a new source of economic growth for the region.

The best prospects in US waters – including most of the Gulf of Mexico and a thousand miles of Alaskan shoreline – are already open for leasing. There’s probably some oil in the moratoria areas, but it is a decade or more from market.

ASPO-USA’s 4th annual conference will highlight a year of increased attention to the Peak Oil energy challenge and highlight intelligent responses to meet the future. Conference participants besides Simmons, Rubin and Mathews are Jim Buckee (former CEO, Talisman Energy) and Neil King (Wall Street Journal).
