Media and public opinion in Germany reached a turning point on May 21 when the Energy Watch Group presented its report „Global Oil Supply“ study in Berlin’s main press center. The report stated: “Peak oil ist jetzt” (Peak oil is now). In German:

It will take a lot more than gardening to fix our food system

Only rice, wheat, corn, beans, and other grain crops are productive and durable enough to provide the dietary foundation of calories and protein. Grains made up about the same portion of the ancient Greek diet as they do of ours. We’ve been stuck with grains for 10,000 years, and our dependence won’t be broken any time soon.

“Things” are certainly unfolding quickly now — the mainstream is filled with energy news, rising costs of food, job losses. Some of us are moving beyond the “peak oil education” stage to “hey, there are some things we can do!” moments with the newly awakened. It’s a critical time to be awake, active, and available. This is what we anticipated, and is what we’ve been preparing for.

So why doesn’t it feel good?
