News reports flitting across computer screens these days seem increasingly to be related to the subject of energy. But what do they signify? The modern world affairs analyst is in little better position to discern the patterns and portents than was his or her ancient Roman counterpart, the reader of entrails.
Why bother? There’s nothing wrong with the environment, right? The late Julian Simon has suggested that we have “the technology to feed, clothe, and supply energy to an ever-growing population for the next 7 billion years.”

With high gas prices and the coming of Peak Oil, coal is making a big comeback these days. The industry says that it’s not a question of whether we’ll use coal – we’ll need the energy – but how we’ll use coal. Environmentalists disagree. They say that coal is the dirtiest energy source, emitting far more greenhouse gases than natural gas or even oil.
While misleading articles about oil and energy are so numerous in the media these days that responding to them all would be an impossible task, it is occasionally worthwhile to critique a typical specimen so as to remain in practice.

I would encourage the New York Times to adopt an editorial policy of stating directly that our burning of fossil fuels is linked to climate change. A critical related matter is the impact of peak oil on the mix of fossil fuels being burned.
