Dr. Bakhtiari was well known throughout the Peak Oil community, but was of particular importance because he was one of the few members who came from an OPEC country, Iran. Before his recent retirement, he had worked as a senior expert for the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) since 1971.
As the price of crude oil sets new records almost daily, the British government remains stunningly complacent. With the $100 barrel looming, the prime minister’s website blithely proclaims “the world’s oil and gas resources are sufficient to sustain economic growth for the foreseeable future.”
Perhaps the public would be better served if all those who are now under orders to use euphemisms when referring to peak oil were to follow Alfred Kahn’s lead and use the word “banana” in their place.
The IEA predicts that an astonishing 42% of increased demand for oil will come from China and India alone, and there is a simple reason for their growing thirst. When incomes rise, people want cars. When people want cars, they require fuel to run them.
The Wall Street Journal’s story marks an important turning point in the public’s understanding of peak oil.
