Humanity’s last little blast of carbon for a millennium or so is being auctioned off to the highest bidder for a simple reason: it’s the rich who have the power to shape such decisions, and deciding those precious allocations through the marketplace suits them just fine.
In many countries rationing of water, food and other essential goods has become a matter of survival for a large share of the population. Their day-to-day experience in sharing resources could hold lessons for those of us in the North once we decide to start bringing consumption in line with what the world can support.
What is needed is an approach called commoning – the idea that we all share responsibility. We are all are entitled to share natural resources– but only so far as use is made at a sustainable scale.
