People in civilizations tend to cut themselves off from the immediate experience of nature nature to a much greater extent than the uncivilized do. Does this help explain why civilizations crash and burn so reliably, leaving the barbarians to play drinking games with mead while sitting unsteadily on the smoldering ruins?
There are two kinds of people, whether in Greece or elsewhere: those who welcome or understand that fundamental change and discontinuity are inevitable, perhaps on the way too soon for convenience, and, those who fervently want the level of income and consumption of the past — regardless of economic and ecological realities. Fortunately for Greeks, they have a continuous and ancient society under the surface of the unstable transnational corporate state.
There is definitely a sense of trying to repay a debt and I’m very, very, keen that that should happen.

I was in Greece from June 23 through July 5, the experience was both enlightening and disturbing, and is worth relating.
Our age has no shortage of curious features, but for me, at least, one of the oddest is the way that so many people these days don’t seem to be able to think through the consequences of their own beliefs.
This is where we are heading. We are heading to weird weather incidents. We are heading towards strained infrastructure.
Transition groups attempt to create the change they want to see.
The reality is that the technology of the day distances us from what matters.
