New York state shale gas: Not so much

A drilling foreman once told me, "Don’t believe ANY reserve number unless it’s linked to a price." And, that is just what petroleum geologist and consultant Arthur Berman and his colleague Lyndon Pittinger have done in a new report on the viability of shale gas in New York state.

If Mexico is the next Brazil in oil production, brace for disappointment

Recent reforms would open oil exploration and development in Mexico to major oil companies for the first time in decades. But it’s instructive to look at what actually happened in Brazil since the time its potential as a major new oil producer was touted several years ago under similar circumstances.
