After a rocket ride through science, I am hanging up the gloves, feeling a little ashamed and embarrassed to have devoted so much of my life to what I now see as a misguided cause that has done more harm than good in this world.
The previous post details my views about the limits of science. In this post, I will focus more on my own reaction as a human participant in the enterprise.
As is so often the case, my trajectory, in hindsight, looks straightforward and linear. Halley’s comet introduced me to the sky in 1985–1986 at age 15–16, quickly leading to my building a 10-inch Newtonian telescope on a German equatorial mount (using plumbing parts from my plumber neighbor). Through this telescope, I saw all nine planets in one night (when there were nine), an individual star (supernova) 36 million light years away, and a quasar 2 billion light years away. I was a physics major at Georgia Tech and spent every-other-quarter at the Naval Research Lab working on optical communications for space. I had my pick of graduate schools, and chose Caltech for its idyllic setting, its relaxed, collaborative atmosphere, and access to “big glass.” Within a few months of starting, I had gone on observing runs to the venerable Palomar 200-inch telescope and the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory on Mauna Kea. What a dream I was living! Meanwhile, I enjoyed many outdoor adventures with fellow grad students, some of whom have become life-long friends.
I did not expect to stay in academia (the statistics were not encouraging to a middling student), and interviewed at a few “industry” jobs while also dipping a toe into “prize” postdoc fellowships and create-your-own postdoc adventures. I picked one from the “adventure” bucket, to start a lunar laser ranging project as a test of general relativity at the University of Washington. Abandoning my graduate expertise in infrared astronomical instrumentation was risky, but I saw this postdoc as a last hurrah in academia, deciding that I might as well have fun. I loved the people I worked with, and savored my time in Seattle. Unintentionally, this gutsy move looked very attractive to faculty search committees, two of which tracked me down based on the reputation of my graduate work and then put me on their short lists after learning of my new direction. One of these led to a tenure-track job at UCSD starting in 2003, where I kept the pedal to the metal on the lunar ranging project. During a 20 year career there, I was never turned down for funding my project, hit all the usual promotion steps at the expected times (tenure then full professor), and felt that I had “made it” by all traditional measures. Having written and reviewed a large number of peer-reviewed papers and served as panel reviewer for NASA and the NSF for far more proposals than I ever wrote, I knew the “game” quite well. I had a versatile set of powerful tools that I could bring to bear on what seemed like almost any problem. Science was, in some ways, the essence of my being, and I found plenty of reward in it—both intrinsically and societally.
So, what happened?
A Gradual Exit
My path away from science involved a number of key elements.
- I became aware that some of the pillars on which modern life is based were necessarily temporary. Growth on a finite planet would have to stop—both in physical terms like energy, but also in economic terms.
- Fossil fuels, upon which we are utterly dependent, would soon taper off, being a finite resource.
- Fertilizer and agriculture critically depend on fossil fuels, so human population could experience a large correction later this century.
- The Limits to Growth work from 1972—which I found to be insightful and credible—reinforced the plausibility of a mid-century major “adjustment.”
- The turbulence of a transition this momentous could be so disruptive (resource wars, economies in ruins) that all my work testing general relativity might be lost and rendered meaningless (as well as all the things my colleagues work on).
- Renewable technologies are not as easy as they sound: fossil fuels do things that the electricity from renewables has a hard time replicating, and the materials demands ramp up extraction and its associated ills.
- Biodiversity loss (extinctions, tragic population declines) spell an ultimate dire fate if we do not heed the warnings: we are obviously now powerful enough to destroy large swaths of the ecosphere and community of life.
- Technology is what created the predicament, and constitutes an inappropriate response, as we will never master all knowledge and will inevitably create unintended consequences.
- An energy substitute for fossil fuels is the last thing we need, as energy is what powers our expanding terminal encroachment on the living world.
- Science is a narrow tool: powerful and tenacious like a pit bull, but having no intrinsic wisdom or context. It concerns itself with what we can do, not what we should do.
I now think a significant portion of my adult life has been mis-spent. Scientific institutions (and university STEM departments) are, to me, a sort of day camp for smart people. Our society approves of these institutions and rewards its practitioners, in part based on the misguided notion that this is where solutions to our problems will originate. Instead, science/technology is far more likely to produce the seed corn for another generation of ecological destruction.
For one thing, most people are working on efforts that either do not relate at all to our pressing concerns, or when they are, it tends to be more of a doubling-down on the kinds of hair-brained things that got us into this predicament in the first place.
Even so, almost nothing substantive happens. More papers get published each year, lots of press releases go out, and TED talks get made. These things are great for cluttering the front of the refrigerator, like purple horses in fingerpaint. Yet in my 20 years in academia, the halls never rang with triumph of a new major breakthrough. Okay, some people in my institution were part of the cast of thousands working to find the Higgs boson, which was completely expected and did nothing to rattle the cage—leaving an aftertaste of disappointment. The other big news during my astrophysics career was the first observation of gravitational waves from black hole mergers. The main surprise here was in the size of the black holes. But the merger sequence followed general relativity expectations perfectly: no seismic change to our understanding of the universe. It seems like a lot of (expensive) bustle for little gain, and what gains we do see often translate to a net loss to the community of life—so maybe I should not complain about the lack of furious progress.
Writing and reviewing countless grant proposals for many millions of dollars taught me that each (successful) proposal is a well-crafted fiction. I’m not saying that scientists are charlatans, but that the budgets, timelines, and promises are incommensurate with actual results. To some extent, this is okay: science is an exploration into the unknown, and it is silly to pretend that anyone can predict exactly the three year course a funded effort will take. But I know full well from my own grant history that the projected accomplishments were aspirational, and seldom are fully achieved. This is normal, and expected.
As I drifted away from a belief in science as the ultimate practice, I had a hard time seeing how I would continue to satisfy the expectations of my department and university. At the highest levels of academic review on campus, what matters is impact, and I felt I could probably manage to maintain some measure of impact in connection with concerns over planetary limits. But few of my departmental colleagues would understand the value of something so far from standard physics research, and most of the courses I taught would seem empty, or worse: propagating tools that appear to do more harm than good.
In short, I came to realize I was one of the bad guys. I like the saying that everyone is the hero of their own story. Part of me would certainly like to believe so, but no—I’m still a villain, if unwittingly so. The projects I worked on demanded copious energy, resources, and travel far out of line with care for the natural world. The result in no way helped the more-than-human world. I can say the same about virtually all science. It’s extremely focused on short-term, narrow-boundary benefits for humans at the ultimately-unaffordable expense of ecological health. I lament our society’s squandering of talent that presently pushes on the very things that make our situation more precarious.
I now find myself to be in an odd position: possessing well-honed skills in reductive, logical, quantitative analysis while recognizing the narrowness of those mental modes. I can “robot” with the best of them, but no longer see the appeal of always thinking like a bot, even though this form of thinking is revered in scientific circles. As one indicator, blog posts of mine that crunch the numbers—robot style—tend to get a lot more attention than ones that say to forget the numbers and take in the wider picture.
What’s It All For?
As a scientist at a university, I found myself asking: what is it we’re doing, here? Once we look past the self-important huffiness so common among my cohort, is science helping or hurting US? By US, I mean the entire community of life. We are nothing without the collective WE. Clever scientists might be able to spin a tale of how one day in the future their work might benefit the more-than-human world. But set against the harms we know come from the work today, the more likely case is more of the same: terminal damage.
I suppose an item I could append to the above list of factors contributing to my exit (thus dialing it up to eleven) is: Science, as it is practiced in our society, is a nearly perfect expression of human supremacy. It’s all for us (humans); it’s all about us. Most science is, therefore, in service to the Human Reich. I’m tired of being associated with that team.
Science is a fantastic tool: nothing better for ferreting out some kernel of truth in a narrow context. I would not want to see us abandon that capability. However, I would want to see science in service of improving—not destroying—the community of life: the more-than-human world. Unless we start prioritizing the whole, failure is practically baked in, given our tremendous capabilities at perpetrating harm.
Imagine what would happen if the National Science Foundation (NSF) were headed by people who have spent a lifetime embracing and practicing Indigenous ways and wisdoms. They could oversee scientific efforts to supplement our understanding of this complex world as one important and reliable input, but always with an eye to the guiding question: is this research likely to be a net help to the community of life, or a net harm? If in doubt, then maybe: don’t. Efforts aimed just at human concerns seldom do us any long-term favors, as the associated collateral damage to the ecosphere takes our living collective backwards.
Under such a scheme, science would assume a subservient role, and likely would be much smaller in scope. The squirrels and newts would applaud our efforts.
As I find myself more on the outside of “team science” these days (I would like to be accepted on “team life,” despite a steady record of crushing losses), I am reminded of a moving song by Dar Williams called The Great Unknown. I recommend listening to it or looking over the lyrics. It’s not a perfect fit, but it hits on some key themes.






I wouldn’t be so hard on yourself. You’ve used your scientific background and ability as a communicator to convey complex topics to a general audience in a way not many people can. Personally, I am a lot more interested in your posts that take in the wide picture, rather than the number-crunching…
I’m a college student who recently abandoned my biology major for either English or philosophy, because it became clear that science can’t, by itself, fix our problems… but I’m a bit at a loss for how, say, philosophy actually DOES help us better deal with the problems we have today. I’m happy to debate whether expanding our conception of “us” to animals is a good way to motivate people to deal with sustainability issues… But that doesn’t necessarily solve climate change either, if people don’t start believing it, and I really don’t think they will. So my question is… if not science, what SHOULD I be studying?
Hi Tom, Thanks for the article. I don’t think your views are alarmist at all, but a proportionate and considered response to the evidenced trajectories of collapse. Where I’d demur a little, is the centring of technology as cause, rather than symptom (Jeremy Rifkin’s otherwise impressive The Age of Resilience tends toward this stance too). Which begs the question, so what is driving human society (and the planet’s biosphere) over the edge? Here I guess arguments centred on the Anthropocene, Capitalocene and Symbiocene (Albrecht) help to tease out differing theoretical approaches and determinants, but at root our now globalised system/’civilisation’ based on incessant growth, materialist ideas of progress and species exceptionalism are together I think at the core of our planetary demise. I also think that the new philosophy of science offers a more congenial approach to an ecological and relational understanding of complex systems and therefore is not so distinct or oppositional to traditional wisdom and indigenous knowledge, spiritual belief systems and more empathetic ways of approaching and apprehending the web of life Capri and Luisi – The Systems View of Life, or Theise’s Notes on Complexity are good entrees into this (I think). Yes I too followed a similar path but eventually made the decision to become an organic farmer working with horses. Now this is a real challenge and very worthwhile endeavor. Yes I was 60 years old when I made the decision and have never looked back. Without a doubt this was the greatest challenge I could ever have and certainly not an easy one. At 75 it really keeps me going and it is a great way to spend the remaining years of my life providing food for others and keeping physically fit.

It’s the nitrogen component which depends upon natural gas (a fossil fuel), which is converted through the Haber–Bosch process.
Some believe that current human population numbers utterly depend upon the nitrogen produced via the Haber–Bosch process, but I do not. What chemical-industrial fertilizers did was combine with other technologies to result in industrial scaled agriculture, which dramatically increased the ratio of units of production to units of human labor, resulting in a very dramatic reduction of farm labor — which required a dramatic transformation of the total economy — which then required a luxury-based (non-needs based) “production” of goods and services far beyond anything which had previously existed, or could even have been imagined.
We can have soil fertility without chemical-industrial agriculture, but only by lowering those units of production in proportion to units of labor, which means we’d have to return to small scale local food production — which is entirely fine by me. Industrial-chemical agriculture has been a catastrophic disaster both ecologically and socially.
The major change in shifting from industrial-chemical agriculture back to food production as it had been prior to chemical-industrial agriculture isn’t a mass human starvation event, but a return to local agrarianism as a way of life. That is, if the climate system will allow it. That’s the bigger question. Will the climate system of the near future cause mass global famine? It may well do so!

Having now read this post in whole, I want to say that the problem isn’t science, per se, but science divorced from that which gave birth to science — being philosophy (as the love of wisdom). When “science” had largely completed its divorce from philosophy, it no longer took the Big Questions — questions about meaning and value and purpose, etc., seriously. Ethics and aesthetics … that’s for philosophers, not scientists, they would say. And so too many scientists sold their souls to serve technology as a kind of religion, or egoism as a similar kind of religion.
You’re doing fine. I suspect there is a book here — a philosophical book. We need it. And so do you.
I started reading Tom Murphy’s Do the Math on this site when he did a long series on different energy sources, their potential to scale up to replace fossil fuels (also covered), problems…it was loaded with data as Murphy said he was a data geek, loved data. We all have our kinks and that isn’t mine, I don’t relate well to math, but I appreciated that Murphy used his proclivities and talents to carefully analyze every energy source being touted and compare them…and conclude that there is no magic bullet out there. He also did a couple columns addressing the popular fantasy that we can use space travel to leap over limits. This is really useful work. Maybe bouncing lasers off the moon wasn’t useful, but…there are scientists figuring out how the ecosystems within soil work, some of which is useful for farmers. I don’t think there is any real chance of a policy solution–we’ll have collapse, therefore, which is what will open up possibilities, mostly on a local level–but it still seems worthwhile to analyze proposals, to assess which have real potential and how much, which work together well, which might exacerbate species loss and harm to ecosystems, or social injustice–which in my opinion are other symptoms of the same source as climate change. Some here label that source anthropocentrism–I see it as a culture based on domination. Domination of women by men, lower class people by upper class people, the rest of nature by humanity, dark-skinned people by palefaces, it’s kind of ONE THING, and we’re in this fix because an aspect of this culture is that it doesn’t mind using violence to achieve its aim of domination and control, and has gotten very good at it. Peaceable, egalitarian cultures that have achieved a stable balance stand little chance against the marauding, expansionary, violent peoples who have been absorbed into this borg.
I’m seeing “ontology,” presently, as a “framing” topic. Very often we’re not even aware of how we frame things — whether in the sciences, in philosophy, or otherwise. So ontological questions seem to me to be rather fundamental.
If anyone is interested in my exploration into ontology, here’s a conversation on that topic I had with a “robot” today — if only because it’s difficult to find humans to discuss these matters with.

I’ve started during this year incorporating resilience.org into my daily news reading, along with your posts either here or on your “do the math” website. I saw little to no comments until today when I looked more closely at the end of the article. In any case, I wanted to comment because I can relate to your life journey and appreciate greatly your turn to more holistic ways of thinking in the last couple of years. I too was a bit of a scientific “boy wonder” in my teens, entering into and winning national “science fair” competitions in the early 1980’s. My plan at the time was to leverage those successes to “escape” my rigid cultural upbringing in the Deep South and become a physicist, which I did in part by going to Stanford University from Mississippi in the mid 80’s. I hit a major detour however, which involved an unexpected and uncontrolled deep dive into my own psychological makeup and limits of my mental health in concert with a “spiritual awakening” of sorts that led me on a questioning path similar to what you have engaged with in the last couple of years. Instead of physics, I ended up majoring in Anthropology, and engaged in a lot of social and environmental “self education” including reading limits to growth, becoming active in the then-current anti-apartheid movement, studying “eastern” philosophy and religion, etc.. All of this led me to a not-so-successful series of career choices but a very interesting life journey. I learned the hard way about the necessary balance between following your heart and ideals versus putting food on the table!
In any case, I would like to say persevere but don’t be too hard on yourself! We are all facing a deeply challenging next few decades together. In my understanding currently, the best we can do is re-educate ourselves and try as best we can to live the life we hope to eventually make available for the societies that replace ours. To that end I focus my energy on organic gardening and permaculture, and building local relationships with like-minded folks. In my spiritual path I’ve settled on Zen Buddhist meditation and engagement with others on that path. My interpretation of that path is integrated with my gardening, and accepting that my efforts may be like a drop in the bucket as far as effecting positive change in my lifetime, but having faith that my efforts will yield great benefits for more distant generations of living beings, much like the fabled butterfly wings changing the weather across the planet over time and distance. I dunno. Biology is as brutal as physics. But we’re doomed either way. The real problem IMHO is that civilization was invented to to fight war (sorry, but that’s what most religions were also invented for, too). Might might not make right, but it does write history. Puns intended.
I am not a scientist but I did study biology at the post secondary level. I’ve argued for years that there is ‘Science’ and ‘science’… One has ethics, intellectual honesty and genuine curiosity and a focus on knowledge-seeking. The other is focussed on application—regardless of long-term consequence, gaining reputation and making money and it is utterly exploitable. We find ourselves living (dying?) in an exploited world. The small-s scientists are being paid handsomely to denigrate the big-S scientists. And they have the powerful tools of modern marketing and media to do so.
I’m saddened reading your article but I’m also gladdened by people such as Dr. Peter Hotez who risks a lot because of his book: “The Deadly Rise of Anti-Science: A Scientist’s Warning”. That you have arrived where you are puts you strongly in the ‘Good Guy’ camp and worthy of respect.
I wish you well and hope that you refind your love of Science.

Did my comments on your previous post make any good sense to you? You may be asking what underpinned them.
Basically the inspiration occurred to me to ask the universe, “What are the requisites for science to exist?” and, as can happen with such open prayer, the answer was quite unimaginable and unspeakably liberating for me, a 57 year-old man (human being) inculcated from birth in New Zealand in the dualistic Crown dialect of English.
I was a confirmed failure at Science, Physics, Psychology, Art and other “Disciplines” by age 30 in the 1970s. Then one evening a sketching teacher bade us to draw the negative space of a chair. That 10 minute exercise transformed my understanding of paradox and, in a wonderful “Aha” moment, this sketching teacher offered me more insight into our human condition and the ways of the universe than had all my previous teachers and professors in a decade.
In 1991 the sight of our “Shock and Awe” invasion of Iraq was another “Aha” moment, this time instilling in me terrible visions of dystopia such that I vowed to never own another car or fly in jets again. In retrospect, while this action alienated me from nearly all my car~/jet addicted peers, this radical change of lifestyle also liberated me in the realization that all information is physical, we are our language, it is the key to our future and I really have little or no idea what I am saying.
In 2005, now a school cleaner, I was emailed on a Friday afternoon out of the blue a draft of the revised NZ National Education Curriculum Framework with subject line “Can this be improved?”
The above experiences over my decades are relevant because they help explain my ability that day to see at a glance the framework is fatally flawed, especially the foundation notion of “Science” and to thus ask the fundamental question, “What are the requisites for Science to exist?” and be answered with a list of the qualities of compassion, which turn out to be paradoxically the complement of the ego.

No pedagogue has ever faulted it and all fastidiously dismiss it this past 18 years. Compassion reminds us we are moral, mortal beings.
Compassion inconveniently reminds the philosophy is the loving of wisdom, science is an active state of being while psychology and physics are intimately entangled experiences of existence – they are verbs, doing words. The ego would have us deny this and have us believe these “disciplines are merely an amoral way of thinking and “corpus of knowledge”.

Without compassion, the ego can easily make even the most well-intentioned of us become our own worst enemy. It is compassion with its qualities of humility and forgiveness that enable us to truly learn from our perceived errors and live more scientific (sustainable) lives. Our Anglosphere “universities” have for 4 centuries been extremely exclusive, arrogant ego-driven institutions lacking compassion and primarily designed to enable The Crown merchant bankers to exploit knowledge for their private profit. This is reflected in the Crown dialect of English,”which is widely recognized now as the “global language of business”.
Enjoy gratitude that you have come to question your notion of science and perhaps be liberated into your greater potential by better understanding what and why you speak as you do. Be mindful of the sage advice of Confucius: our greatest Civic act is to rectify (correct) our language.
