If I were the global ruler

There is an obvious irony in this title.

I hold deep suspicion toward concentrated power, and I remain cautious around charismatic authority, shaped by observing how failures trace to decision-making drifting away from those most affected. And yet here I am, temporarily and implausibly appointing myself ruler of the world.

That contradiction carries intention.

This piece lives as a thought experiment. It offers a space where realism can speak before being reshaped into reassurance or strategy. It arises from curiosity and willingness to imagine beyond inherited constraint.

This piece looks upstream. It asks a simpler and more demanding question:

What conditions tend to produce humans who can sustain empathy, accountability and mutuality under strain, even when circumstances press hard, among several interacting forces?

And when those conditions erode, where does repair begin?

If, briefly and paradoxically, I were the global ruler, this is where I would start.

Pregnancy and birth would sit outside productivity logic

Why: Development begins within environments of stress or safety long before a child enters the world.

Pregnancy would be treated as a period of heightened sensitivity, recognised for its profound influence on the developing nervous system. Ambient strain, hormonal load, uncertainty and emotional climate shape the earliest foundations of regulation and trust.

Work would taper by design. Later stages of pregnancy would involve paid leave that feels ordinary and expected. Earlier stages would include part-time rhythms that carry social legitimacy and security. This approach would align working life with human biology, allowing systems to adapt around bodies rather than bodies adapting around institutional pace.

The intention stays simple: reduce strain at the very beginning.

Birth would be recognised as a major relational threshold. The default environment would resemble a tranquil hotel room rather than a clinical ward with warmth, privacy, gentle light, low noise, nourishing food and familiar people nearby.

Medical care would stay close, skilled and responsive, while the atmosphere would support calm rather than vigilance. Women would choose how their bodies move through birth, guided by sensation and instinct.

Authority would rest with embodied knowledge, because as fear softens and agency stays intact, the body often coordinates in a more fluid way. This approach honours birth as a formative experience whose emotional tone carries forward into patterns of trust and regulation.

The first three years would become protected infrastructure

Why: Early attunement shapes lifelong capacity for empathy, shame tolerance and relational repair.

The first three years of life would be treated as essential civic infrastructure rather than a private burden held by individual families. Paid caregiving leave would span this period, including parents and primary caregivers, supported by flexible return pathways that preserve continuity of relationship.

Where care extends beyond parents, stability would guide design with small groups and familiar adults. Systems would reward relationship rather than throughput.

Universal early-years support would arrive as a default. Home visits. Mental health care. Practical assistance. Parenting education focused on attunement, rupture and repair. These supports would carry dignity and ease.

The goal stays modest. Fewer nervous systems shaped under chronic relational strain.

Work would reflect human limits

Why: Adults living under sustained threat transmit that pressure into families and institutions.

The standard working week would shorten, supported by predictable hours and genuine periods of rest. Workload caps would exist and carry enforcement, linked to health outcomes and staff stability.

Job security would feel steady, and career paths would include spaciousness rather than constant precarity. Movement would be possible without punishment and pauses would not signal failure.

Status would decouple from overwork. Promotion would reflect judgment, stewardship and relational capacity, with accountability to those affected by decisions rather than upward performance alone.

Career transitions would be treated as normal developmental phases rather than personal breakdowns. People would be supported to reorient when roles no longer fit their capacity, life stage or values, without needing collapse to justify change.

Evaluation would privilege quality of contribution over visibility. Quiet competence, long-term thinking and care for downstream consequences would carry weight, even when they resist easy metrics.

A culture organised around endurance tends to cultivate defended ways of being. Work organised around limits makes space for discernment, repair and responsibility to extend beyond the self.

Families would release the role of economic shock absorber

Why: Scarcity and humiliation erode relational presence.

Housing stability would form a baseline. Widespread access to home ownership would replace dependence on temporary tenure. Housing stock would be designed for families and long-term living, with limits on speculative forces that turn shelter into a financial abstraction.

Universal basic services would reduce background load. Healthcare. Transport. Education. Legal support. The intention would centre steadiness rather than excess.

Anti-poverty support would arrive predictably and respectfully. Survival mode narrows attention, and prolonged survival mode leaves marks on bodies and relationships.

Childcare and schooling would centre relationship

Why: Performance cultures shape performative selves.

Early education would prioritise low ratios and high consistency. Learning environments would support nervous system regulation alongside information transfer and would include calm spaces, movement, sensory awareness and repair processes.

Social and emotional learning would hold equal status with academic content, and include subjects like conflict navigation, boundaries, consent, accountability and group repair. These capacities would be taught as skills developed over time.

Assessment would emphasise mastery through demonstration and apprenticeship. Learning would unfold gradually rather than through constant ranking.

Community would serve as a living container

Why: Isolation concentrates pressure until people harden.

Neighbourhood-based mutual aid would receive stable funding. Shared meals, childcare co-operatives, elder care and tool libraries woven into daily life.

Third spaces would exist by design and be designed as warm, accessible places with regular rhythms. Intergenerational contact would feel familiar rather than exceptional.

Distributed care reduces the likelihood that care distorts into control.

Power would be held at human scale

Why: Power behaves differently when people stay visible to one another.

Civic life would organise around neighbourhood communities of roughly 150 people. This scale allows familiarity alongside diversity of skill, temperament, and perspective.

At this size, behaviour stays legible and responsibility remains traceable. Leadership functions as a role rather than an identity.

Neighbourhoods would hold autonomy over local matters such as care, food, shared resources and conflict processes. Participation would feel grounded rather than ceremonial.

Coordination between neighbourhoods would favour transparency, reciprocity and traceable exchange, with limits that keep accountability intact as distance grows.

Leadership would rotate. Roles would carry time limits. Accountability would live among people who know one another’s histories and limits.

Repair would rely on clear processes, shared norms and the involvement of trusted third parties rather than private negotiation alone.

Proximity alone does not guarantee safety and separation or removal becomes necessary when harm resists repair.

Media and technology would quiet ego amplification

Why: Attention economies cultivate performative identity and shape nervous systems as much as narratives.

Platforms would carry responsibility for harm metrics such as polarisation and addiction. Virality would include friction and sharing would slow by default.

Children would remain protected from attention markets. Advertising and engagement design aimed at minors would face strict boundaries.

Cultural prestige would tilt toward craft, depth and continuity. Local journalism and long-form work would function as public goods.

Adulthood would carry structure and recognition

Why: When adulthood lacks shape, status rushes in to fill the gap.

The passage from adolescence into adulthood would be marked clearly. Separation from childhood roles, exposure to responsibility and guidance from elders who have lived through loss, failure, and repair.

Adulthood would arrive through recognition rather than self-designation.

Clear rites of passage would mark transitions into responsibility. Service, apprenticeship and mentorship. Civic education that includes power dynamics, manipulation literacy, consent and group psychology.

Repair would hold a central place. Conflict would appear as expected. Accountability processes would stay visible and resourced.

Fewer adults would need to improvise maturity under pressure.

Illness and uneven capacity would be held

Why: Capacity varies across bodies and across time.

Systems would assume fluctuation as a feature of human life. Illness, disability, neurodivergence and periods of low capacity would appear as ordinary aspects of the human condition.

Care would stand independent of productivity. Belonging would rest on presence rather than output.

Support would arrive steadily even when contribution wanes. Dignity would stay intact across all phases of life.

Elderhood and end of life would be held in community

Why: How a society treats ageing and dying shapes how people relate to dependency, fear and loss across the lifespan.

Elder care would remain embedded in community life rather than sequestered at the margins. Older adults would stay visible, valued for judgment, memory and continuity, even as capacity changes.

Care would prioritise familiarity and relationship in small settings with consistent caregivers. Environments designed for dignity, orientation and calm rather than efficiency alone.

End of life would be approached as a relational process rather than a private medical event. People would die with accompaniment, choice and ritual, supported by those they know and trust.

This approach would reduce fear, soften isolation, and allow dependency to be experienced as part of shared life rather than as failure.

Ritual, ceremony, land and seasonal life would return

Why: Humans regulate collectively and meaning grows through rhythm and relationship.

Civic life would include regular ritual and gathering free from performance or productivity. Seasonal markers and shared meals, with ceremonies that honour beginnings, endings, transitions and loss.

Work and schooling would move with the seasons. Periods of intensity would balance with periods of rest, reflection and repair.

Land, water, trees and the more-than-human world would be treated as participants in shared systems rather than as backdrop or resource. Care would include attentiveness to soil, watersheds and the long memory held by living ecosystems.

This stance would ask for shared restraint rather than shared belief. When land is treated as alive, limits arrive earlier and harm becomes easier to notice.

Grief would hold a place.

Loss, death and endings would receive public acknowledgement and collective holding. People would share sorrow together rather than carrying it alone.

Ritual would give suffering somewhere to settle.

What this thought experiment offers

This piece began as an imaginative exercise, a way to step outside inherited constraints and see what appears when attention moves upstream.

Taken literally, redesigning the entire world this way stretches beyond realism, because large systems are hard to coordinate, power gathers in fewer hands and places differ too much for one design to fit.

Taken structurally, however, what appears here is a sensible arrangement for sustaining human and more-than-human life. It aligns with known limits. It reduces strain at critical points. It supports development, care and accountability at scales where relationship remains possible.

Rather than a blueprint for the world, this offers clues.

As large systems strain and loosen, smaller systems already begin to form. People create pockets of care, work, learning and shelter that operate by different rules. These efforts remain partial, local and imperfect, yet they matter.

The value of this structure lies there.

It offers orientation for those building small, regenerative forms of life within and alongside larger systems that continue to exceed human capacity. It supports steadiness rather than dominance, repair rather than control and continuity rather than growth.

The future, whatever shape it takes, will grow from places like that.
