Live Event: The King Is Dead, Now What?: The 250-Year Struggle for Democracy

Past Event: September 10, 2025 • 11:00am US Pacific Time
Pierre-Antoine Demachy (1723-1807). "Exécution capitale, place de la Révolution".

We’re living through a moment of profound transformation. To better understand it—and to chart a path forward—we need to reckon with the political forces that shaped the world we’ve inherited.

Recently, Resilience+ hosted a special online conversation inspired by The King Is Dead, Now What? The 250-Year Struggle for Democracy, a three-part audio series by the Human Nature Odyssey podcast tracing the long arc of the global battle between monarchy and revolution, authoritarianism and democracy, and hierarchy and equality.

During this event, Post Carbon Institute Executive Director Asher Miller spoke with storyteller and series creator Alex Leff and historian Dan Hoyer, an expert on social complexity and societal collapse. Together, they examined how past societies have responded to upheaval, the recurring tension between progressive and reactionary forces, and how we might better understand—and ultimately transcend—the left/right political spectrum in this era of great unraveling.

The conversation was not just about the past—it was about how we move forward.

We encourage you to listen to the full three-part series of The King Is Dead, Now What? before viewing the recording for a deeper experience. From the storming of the Bastille to the rise of fascism, from communist revolutions to neoliberal collapse, the series explores the ideologies, events, and power struggles that have shaped today’s political landscape.

The recording of this event and additional resources are only available to Resilience+ members.
