Live Event: Discussion: What Can You Do About the Economy? How to Be a Degrowth Practitioner and Activist

Past Event: December 10, 2024 • 12:00pm US Pacific
People at farmers market

What can you do about an overgrown economy that is burning too much energy, consuming too many resources, damaging the biosphere, and failing to provide shared prosperity? “Degrowth!” is the one-word answer. But what is needed to organize a compelling degrowth movement? And what on-the-ground actions can breathe life into a thriving and just local economy that works within nature’s limits? If businesses and governments aren’t going to lead the charge to right-size the economy, then it’s up to us, the ones who understand the problem of overshoot and care enough to take action.

Post Carbon Institute Executive Director Asher Miller is joined by Anitra Nelson, PhD, a degrowth scholar and activist at the University of Melbourne in Australia. Anitra has written many books about degrowth and the systemic changes needed to make the shift to a post-capitalist, post-carbon, post-consumerist economy, including Beyond Money: A Postcapitalist Strategy and Exploring Degrowth: A Critical Guide. She not only studies and promotes these ideas, but also puts them into practice. Anitra is a tiny house champion and works with Cohousing Australia and other organizations to develop ecologically sound and collaborative housing. Her latest project is co-editing the book Post-Carbon Inclusion: Transitions Built on Justice.
