Internet revolution that elected Obama could save Earth: Gore

AFP
Former US vice president Al Gore said an Internet revolution carrying Barack Obama to the White House should now focus its power on stopping Earth’s climate crisis.

The one-time presidential contender turned environmental champion told Web 2.0 Summit goers in San Francisco Friday that technology has provided tools to save the planet while creating jobs and stimulating the crippled economy.

“The young people who have been inspired by Barack Obama’s campaign and the movement that powered Barack Obama’s campaign want a purpose,” Gore said.

Obama likely to tackle energy early on

David Ivanovich, Houston Chronicle
Exploration, efficiency, new fuels among priorities in reshaping policy

… Obama has said energy is “the most important issue that our future economy is going to face.”

The Obama White House is widely expected to take up energy early on, after focusing on stabilizing the economy.

Obama and Democratic leaders on Capitol Hill will have to decide — likely by March — what new areas offshore they might be willing to open up for oil and gas drilling, congressional staffers and lobbyists say.

Also watch for an early push during the new administration to resurrect an energy package that stalled out in the current Congress. That plan would require electric utilities to generate a portion of their power using renewable energy sources, force oil companies to renegotiate offshore royalties and push new energy efficiency standards for buildings and appliances.

Some other Obama priorities — including higher fuel mileage requirements for cars and trucks and creating a trading mechanism to cap greenhouse gas emissions — will almost surely wait until later in the term, while his call to impose a windfall profits tax on the oil companies may never happen, Capitol Hill experts say.

Al Gore group urges Obama to create U.S. power grid

Deborah Zabarenko, Reuters
Al Gore’s Alliance for Climate Protection has some environmental advice for the incoming Obama administration: focus on energy efficiency and renewable resources, and create a unified U.S. power grid.

On Thursday, the group Gore founded rolled out a new media campaign to push for immediate investments in three energy areas it maintains would help meet Gore’s previously announced challenge to produce 100 percent clean electricity in the United States in a decade.
