Fridge Tales: Stories from a Community Fridge

February 1, 2018

£13 billion of food is thrown away each year by UK households rather than being eaten. Despite growing awareness of food waste, there are few easy ways for people or businesses to get food near it’s ‘sell by’ date to others, until now. Introducing The Community Fridge! Community Fridges are communal places where surplus food is shared with the local community, by local businesses and individuals. It connects the community, helps families save money and reduce waste.

The Community Fridge was first trialled in Swadlincote, South Derbyshire as part of Sainsbury’s Waste less, Save more campaign. Over 9,000 items of food was shared in the first six months! Since, the Community Fridge Network has been set up to create a flourishing community of safe and effectively run fridges that re-distribute nutritious surplus food across the UK.
