City living 2: North eastern cities. Being tales of Sheffield and Edinburgh 18-22nd November 2010

If we can achieve this type of gathering, meeting place, at each and every transition convergence then we are well on the way to transition in our times.

City Living 1 – Tales from London 8-9th November 2010

How do we transition a city? The answer to that is perhaps, simply, for each of us look at a size that is manageable, and I don’t for one second mean by this that a city is too large, not at all, but what I do suggest is that we each ask ourselves a question; “What size of place feels manageable to me, personally?”

A Tale From Portugal, and one from home

I have been astonished to learn as I visited more than 100 transition initiatives over the past 6 months, that nearly all of us are off comers, and with this somewhat dubious title actually seem to breathe fresh life into the communities we have chosen to live in, perhaps for this very reason, delving deeply into the roots of our cherished new homes, and bringing them up for fresh examination in a way that those well established in an area have perhaps become so accustomed to that the value is no longer recognised.

Simplicity and abundance (Day 172) September 17th

John and I take a trip out to visit Woody and Zoe at nearby Cuckoo Farm to see their gorgeous straw bale house, which has been plastered to meet health and safety regulations, and which now looks like an ancient thatched cottage. Over cups of tea I hear about anaerobic digesters and how simple a system they are.

Tales from a tail of wooded land (Days 164-165) September 8th -9th

It would be heartening to think that there could be trust regained in place of the fear, what is it that those who honour ownership above all else fear? And from whence came the sense of alienation from one another, and the sense of entitlement of one above the other?

There is something you can do better than any other (Day 141) August 16th

I start my day late after a much needed lie in and finally come downstairs and start my blog catch up; I have had no opportunity these past few days to get near either internet, or time to myself to write, and now I have both. The sign above the desk reads “Be yourself. There is something you can do better than any other. Listen to the inward voice and follow that” A transition saying indeed; one the Big Society should perhaps adopt.
