Dr. Bakhtiari was well known throughout the Peak Oil community, but was of particular importance because he was one of the few members who came from an OPEC country, Iran. Before his recent retirement, he had worked as a senior expert for the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) since 1971.

A range of speakers stated that current trends in bringing new projects onstream indicate that global oil production would peak on or before 2012, a forecast that coincides with the latest announcement from International Energy Agency.

The Associated Press issued a story Jan 18 which stated that Saudi Arabia intends to increase its oil production capacity by 40% by 2009. In fact, it intends to do no such thing.
