Clarification of the Huge Chevron Gulf Oil Discovery

The September 5th announcement by Chevron and Devon and Statoil of the huge Gulf of Mexico discovery should be clarified. The announcement claims that the discovery could increase US proven reserves of oil by as much as 50%. However, the total amounts are highly speculative.

The top 14 oil exporting states experienced high economic growth in 2005 and the first half of 2006, leading to high domestic consumption of oil. The rates of increase in oil consumption are in the high single digits or low double digits in all top exporting countries except Norway.

The Impact of Additions to Strategic Petroleum Reserves on World Oil Demand

The planned increases and start-up of Strategic Petroleum Reserves worldwide will be a significant source of demand for oil over at least the next several years – in the range of at least (conservatively) 300,000 barrels per day and possibly (probably) significantly higher, to 1,000,000 bpd (or even higher).
